Earth Room

The Earth Room is located on the lowest level of the Kunsthalle (basement). It is accessed through a cave-like passageway, at the end of which is a hole in the floor with a diameter of 10 cm. Here, one has a direct connection to the earth, to the natural subsurface. Treasures (magic lamps, diamonds, etc.) were buried in the resulting “cave,” which is illuminated by a flickering red light and protected by an acrylic glass box. Employees and visitors can use it to express their wishes in writing.

From here, the hole imaginarily extends through the center and core of the Earth until it reappears on the other side of the planet in the ocean near New Zealand (49° 28′ 52″ 80 S – 171° 31′ 29″ 55 E). From this location, the viewer can embark on an imaginary journey that transports them to the opposite side of the planet, then returns them through space to the top floor of the Kunsthalle.

As a visible sign of the thematic connection, a floating HMap will soon be visible at the opposite pole of HHole in New Zealand. Its form elements will shimmer in the sun or moonlight, marking this location accordingly.
